Overview:
Kumbuka Afrika seeks a Project Director to support our work on critical mineral supply chains in the DRC.
The Project Director will contribute to our existing work with partners such as ITSCI and local NGOs to address key issues in critical minerals supply chains relating to child labor, forced labor, legal compliance, capacity of service providers, stakeholder engagement and other issues. The work will focus on mining, labor, procurement, trade rules, due diligence and other relevant policy frameworks, guidelines and best practices.
The Project Director will support Kumbuka Afrika’s efforts to improve national and local systems for monitoring and identifying human rights issues in critical minerals supply chains.
The role:
- The successful candidate will lead a team of Kumbuka Afrika staff and staff from partner organisations including ITSCI (International Tin Supply Chain Initiative) and local entities in carrying out a wide range of activities
- The Project Director will be responsible for the planning, execution, monitoring, and final delivery of all a wide range of activities pertinent to Kumbuka Afrika’s mission and workplan
- The Project Director will also contribute to communications, coordination of partners, and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders in all sectors
- The Project Director will play a critical role in risk management and ensuring safeguarding of staff, partners, and all stakeholders involved in Kumbuka Afrika’s activities and projects
- The Project Director will report to the CEO of Kumbuka Afrika
Logistics:
The successful candidate will be employed by Kumbuka and will be based in Goma, Bukavu, Lubumbashi, or Kinshasa. Regular travel to all project areas will be required.
This is a full-time post.
Requirements:
- Minimum of seven years of professional experience in project management of international donor-funded projects or other donor-funded projects of significant complexity and scope
- Proven experience establishing and maintaining systems for managing project operations, including overseeing the preparation and submission of project deliverables, stakeholder and risk management processes, cost and schedule controls, and sustainability planning and implementation
- Demonstrated experience using adaptive management, evidence-based, and innovation approaches to project management
- Excellent staff management skills which include promoting teamwork, facilitating skills development, and creating an environment which values hard work and shared success
- Strong facilitation, communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
- Proven success in building and maintaining working relationships with diverse project stakeholders; engaging in coalition building; and empowering stakeholders to take ownership of key project outcomes for post-project sustainability of progress
- Experience in working with government agencies and a good understanding of the relevant policy environment
- Experience in public-private partnership promotion and delivery
- Understanding of labor, mining and supply chain issues
- Fluency in English (for non-native speakers, TOEFL score or transcript showing completion of advanced English language coursework is required) and French
- Experience of working in the DRC
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline
